Rhys Hoskins was born and raised in Sacramento, California, to a family of lawyers. He was a competitive child who always wanted to win, whether it was playing card games, board games or pickup games in his family’s backyard. However, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when he was just two years old. Hoskins’ mother ultimately passed away when he was 16 years old, which was a tough blow for him. However, the tragedy brought him closer to his younger sister Meloria.
Hoskins attended Jesuit High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He excelled in baseball, basketball, and football while maintaining a 4.0-grade point average. Despite his success in various sports, Hoskins’ parents encouraged him to participate in a variety of activities rather than focusing solely on one sport.
Hoskins’ baseball teammate, Zach Green, was highly sought after in the 2012 MLB Draft. However, Hoskins chose to pursue college baseball at California State University, Sacramento, where he could develop his mental game. In his freshman year, Hoskins put up impressive numbers, batting .353 with 10 home runs and 53 RBIs, earning him several awards, including Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association First Team Freshman All-American.
In his junior year, Hoskins hit 12 home runs and 53 RBIs, leading the WAC, and was named WAC Player of the Year. In the 2014 MLB Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Hoskins in the fifth round, and he chose to sign with the team for a $349,700 signing bonus. However, Hoskins struggled with inconsistent performances during his professional debut in 2014 with the Class A Short Season Williamsport Crosscutters.
Despite his struggles, the Phillies’ department of player development helped him develop his signature left leg kick batting stance in the Florida Instructional League in September of that year. This improvement led Hoskins to make his MLB debut in 2017, and he has been a key player for the Phillies ever since.
